The period between the beginning of Cromwell’s Protectorate and the death of Queen Anne saw an increased use of portrait miniatures to communicate political importance and influence. From armour to hairpieces, what one was depicted wearing in miniatures could influence how influential, or how much of a ‘bigwig’ they were seen to be. Bringing together works by David des Granges (1611-1672), Susannah Penelope Rosse (1652-1700), and Peter Cross (c.1645-1724), this exhibition features a group of portrait miniatures from the period, depicting some of these important men and women from across Europe.
