VIRTUAL TALK: Emma Rutherford with Jane Austen's House Museum

VIRTUAL TALK: Emma Rutherford with Jane Austen's House Museum

18 September 2026

The Limner Company's director, Emma Rutherford will be giving a talk at Jane Austen's House about portrait miniatures in the museum collection, and what can be learnt from them about Jane’s social circle.

Jane Austen was an avid admirer of the portrait miniature – appreciating the skill that they took and the comfort that they gave. As an amateur artist she famously exclaimed ‘…the little bit (two Inches wide) of Ivory on which I work with so fine a Brush…produces little effect after much labour…’. Portrait miniatures were at the heart of Austen family life, as well as providing an emotional vehicle for Jane’s novels.
