VIRTUAL TALK: Emma Rutherford with Jane Austen's House Museum
18 September 2026
Jane Austen was an avid admirer of the portrait miniature – appreciating the skill that they took and the comfort that they gave. As an amateur artist she famously exclaimed ‘…the little bit (two Inches wide) of Ivory on which I work with so fine a Brush…produces little effect after much labour…’. Portrait miniatures were at the heart of Austen family life, as well as providing an emotional vehicle for Jane’s novels.
