This format of small scale portrait painting has a history distinct from that of portrait miniatures, which are traditionally painted in watercolour. The exhibition brings together a selection of fine early portraits, including examples by Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661), Frans Pourbus (1545/6-1581) and Franciszek Smiadecki (fl.1660-1670).
