GEORGE ENGLEHEART (1750-1829)

Portrait miniature of a Gentleman wearing a scarlet coat, white waistcoat, white stock and frilled shirt

circa 1770
Watercolour on ivory (licence KCEMJWFA)
Oval, 35 mm (1 ³/₈ in) high
Gold bracelet clasp frame, the reverse glazed to reveal plaited hair

SOLD

This portrait miniature belongs to the earlier part of George Engleheart’s long career. Likely painted when the artist was in his 20s, the careful detail packed into this tiny portrait is nothing short of remarkable – with the sitter’s expression and every texture most carefully observed. The powder on the sitter’s shoulder was likely a nod to the expensive nature of this commodity – only reserved for the wealthy or those in highly regarded professions such as the law. The sitter’s scarlet coat – a nod to military uniform – would also have been noted as highly fashionable in this era.
